Compounding Overview

Compounding Creates individualized Medications

Compounded medications are ordered by a practitioner and created by mixing individual ingredients together into the strength and dosage form needed for the patient.  Our pharmacists work with both the patient and the prescriber to develop and customize a prescription medication which will meet the specific patient’s needs.

Historically, almost all prescriptions were compounded. In the 1950's and 1960's, the development of technology and marketing mass drug manufacturing became more common and individualized compounding declined.  Pharmacists moved away from the role of compounding prescription to dispensing tablets and capsules.  Over the past decade, there is a growing trend away from the mass marketing drugs to more personalized medicine, especially for patients who don't fit into the pharmaceutical drug sale model. Modern technology and innovative techniques now allow trained pharmacists to customize, through compounding, individualized medications for each patient.

Many patients require drugs, products, dosage forms which are not commercially available.
